Patch 4.2 Roundup
Well, it was a very busy week. Brought in roughly 170k between Tuesdays. I also surpassed 1 million gold on Tues, which was the goal I had set for myself with this patch, so I’m pretty satisfied with how everything went. Biggest sellers for me included:
- Cut Inferno Rubies – Was easily pushing out 20+ a day at around 200g each
- Other gem cuts were selling consistently around 100g or so, with Jewelcrafting accounting for approximately 60% of my patch week profits overall.
- Didn’t have much luck with LW PvP gear until Tuesday, when I sold an entire 8 piece set @ 2k each (these were actually the specific sales that put me over the cap!)
- Sold about 3-4 on the new Shaman glyph for 500-600g
- I also made about 20k by spreading everything out across both factions.
What’s Next
A break, for starters. I haven’t even reposted auctions in about 2 days, It’s been a nice change of pace, actually. I’m also working on a new, Top Secret project involving a different server – but I’m keeping the details under wraps for now. I would like to touch up a few of the pages on this site and update some of the information, so I will probably focus on that next week instead of worrying about any new gold-making posts. If you want to chat in the meantime, come find me over at The Consortium (link is on the right, somewhere – feeling lazy) and I’ve been spending a bit more time in their IRC channel lately, so be sure to stop by to check it out.

In case anyone other than me still cares about this, I have a bit of an update. I’ve been following what has been going on with the Blizzard Community API, and they have already released the Character and Guild APIs, so I would expect that the AH one won’t be too far behind. That’s the good news. The bad news is that they have more or less stated that they don’t intend (or can’t, I’m not 100% sure) on providing auction sold data, so in order to move the GIR forward, I’m going to have to figure out some other way of making the information meaningful. That should also keep me busy over the next little while, but with some form of end result on the horizon, I feel pretty motivated to work it out. I’m also trying to make a conscious effort to spend less time on my in-game gold making routine, so that should free me up to start to look into other opportunities. All in all, I’m actually pretty excited about these next few weeks/months.
Hitting the Goldcap has really been an interesting experience for me. I don’t think it is a particularly significant accomplishment for me, as it has never seemed difficult at any point along the way. The only limiting factor has always seemed to be my own time and motivation, but at the same time, I suppose that staying motivated is a significant part of the accomplishment to begin with. I think the most satisfying aspect about this has been the fact that I sat at around 650k a couple months ago when 4.2 information was first released and committed myself to hitting the cap with this patch. It was something that I hadn’t ever really attempted before (large-scale patch preparation) and being able to hit that goal feels both rewarding and freeing at the same time. I don’t feel a pressing need to prove to myself that I can push on to 2 million by repeating the same things over and over again, so I have been bouncing a number of fresh new ideas through my head and off of other people within the gold-making community, and I really like where things are headed.
In the more adequate words of a better man than me:
- The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say. - (J.R.R. Tolkien – The Lord of the Rings)
My next post will probably be announcing some of the changes to the site, once they’ve been completed, but I’ve made plans like this before and I think we all know how they’ve turned out, so you never know.

Woo Hoo – Gratz on the 1 million
Thanks Nev.
How did your 4.2 go? I know a bunch of EU players who were in IRC last Tuesday were adjusting their plans as we all lost our heads over here when the servers went live…
Congratulations on the gold cap!
I agree that all the next possible milestones, like 2m or 5m, are just about how much time you are willing to invest. If you don’t stop playing the AH completely, you will be there sooner or later.
I’m still in search of new ideas for my gold making after hitting the cap. For now I just do what I want in game – new dailies and achievements keep me busy – and I often don’t bother to check or repost my auctions. You are right, it feels good
So I’m really looking forward to your future posts… Good luck with the new projects!
LOTR FTW!
Oh and gratz on the 1mill
I wonder what this super secret project could be….
Maybe I’ll have to drop some hints along the way to keep people on the hook until the BIG reveal. For now, I’ll just make grand sweeping statements as to the unprecedented size and nature of said project.
It certainly is coming along nicely though, even better than I had originally expected
